Today's Peace of Truth: Great Bay Refuge is a Sweet Spot for Weekenders!

It's always nice to get out in the sunshine and enjoy nature in the fall. The cool crisp air and crunchy, toasted leaves under your feet enliven the senses. A great place to go to take in the beauty of our earth is the Great Bay Refuge in Newington, NH. It's located near Pease, and seems to be a fairly unknown of spot. The trails start near an old weapons storage base and branch out in two different directions.

A 1/2 mile trail called Peverly Pond trail takes you about 20 minutes to complete. This is good if you are looking for a little outing with the kids. It passes through a forested area, goes along a pond and heads uphill along a stream and some wetlands. The other trail which we walked yesterday is a 2 mile venture called the Ferry Way Trail. It generally takes 1 hour, but we took a leisurely 2 hour walk along it. It goes by beautifully wooded areas, a beaver pond and marsh, a large field, some old apple trees, and has a great view of the Great Bay which is a nice place to have a picnic if you happen to bring one.

On our journey, we saw tons of chipmunks gathering fallen nuts, a crane by the water, a horseshoe crab shell, a butterfly, tons of other little birds and many other photographers! Besides the wildlife, we found some apples on an old tree to snack on, and generous scenes of fall leaves to gaze upon. The weather was perfect and it was a good little exercise too! I highly recommend visiting this area! :)
