Today's Peace of Truth: Farmer's Markets are Here!

It's Saturday May 2nd, and the Portsmouth Farmers Market has officially begun! It takes place from 8-1:00, at the Town Hall parking lot, every Saturday until the fall. I was excited to see what they had so early in the season, and this is what I found...

There were lots of potted herbs, various potpourris, honeycomb, eggs, fresh greens, homemade yogurt, maple syrup, local wines, farm fresh meats, hot meals, seafood, leather products, hanging plants for mother's day, live chickens, cookie dough, and the list goes on and on. There was live music, the sun was shining and people were out enjoying the day.

Coming from a childhood on the farm, and knowing how short the growing season is in New Hampshire, I realize what these farmers go through in order to survive. They work hard in the fields, from sunset to sundown, all throughout the summer. On weekends and at the other local markets, they sell the fruits of their labor. As the season progresses, the variety of fruits and vegetables grow, and the markets get busier. Sustainable farming isn't easy. These businesses only survive if they sell their produce or products at the market. Luckily, we live in a foodie town, where restaurant owners and chefs come down early on Saturday morning to buy the fresh vegetables, fruits & herbs for their busy weekends. As for the general public, there is a very large population of health-minded individuals, who frequent this local event and support the farms. It's a great way to eat fresh, organic, and naturally healthy. Sometimes it's even cheaper to buy your produce at the farmer's market!!! So next time you head out to get your groceries, remember the little guy, and hit up the farmer's market. It's time to support your local community! :)
