Summer is here and it’s time to enjoy the good things in life. In this busy world, work seems to overspill into personal time and we all need to remember to save time for ourselves and our families. Money isn’t everything and balance is key! It’s time to get out and do those things on your FUN “To-Do” list that you have been meaning to get to!
If you are looking for a relaxing, inexpensive weekend, go check out one of our local treasures- the Kancamagus Scenic Highway. This 34.5 mile stretch of American beauty passes through the White Mountains of our native New Hampshire. So often we forget the riches of our own countryside. I for one had never even driven this route until last weekend! You can enter in Conway by Route 112 heading West, or from the other end by taking the Lincoln exit off of Rt. 93 and heading East. Either way you start, the drive is just as breathtaking and fairly quick unless you stop along the way.
Among the places to stop are scenic overlooks, picnic areas, hiking trails, waterfalls, river walks, and campgrounds for overnight stays. You might as well plan on staying a couple days, for there is much to see and do in nature’s backyard. Be sure to bring a camera, sunscreen, bug-spray, hiking, camping and swimming gear on your adventure. Campgrounds are only $20/night, but they are first come first serve, so grab one early. You must also keep in mind that cell service is poor along this route, so plan accordingly. Gas up and pack coolers before you hit the road, too, since there are no businesses here. It’s just you and the great outdoors!
Key points of interest on the Kancamagus are Sabbaday Falls- the most popular waterfall, due to its ease of access off the main road, (only a couple minutes’ walk into the woods); and Rocky Gorge, where you can bath in sun-soaked pools on smooth river rocks. Lower Falls is another attraction, but often overpopulated due to its prime swimming holes. If you’re like me, you don’t enjoy squeezing in a crowded water-spot, like Hampton Beach…It’s better to revel in the simple pleasures of life, in a quiet, private place, where you can really relax and connect with the Earth. So find your piece of heaven in the White Mountains and escape from the stresses of everyday life. You owe it to yourself and the natural beauty that surrounds you.
